ESPN's Bill Simmons to Launch Grantland

Today on ESPN's PR site, MediaZoneGrantland.com -- Conceived by ESPN's Bill Simmons -- to Launch in June.

You can read more about the announcement via the first link above.

To sum up what this means for the sports blogging world: this is the equivalent of Batman, Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman as college undergrads -- after lots of drinking, partying and watching crappy reality TV --  finally launching Super Friends on graduation day. No one knows what to expect or where this will go, but the excitement is palpable and forces everyone to pay attention.

What do you expect from Grantland?

this is a monumental occasion for all sports fans. espn was a perfect launching pad for the sports guy, but he's built his brand well enough now where he can branch off and have more freedom in the blog-o-sphere. as long as he keeps reality tv commentary to a minimum (Specifically survivor talk) then this will be a huge success. also he'll have more freedom with podcasting.

  2. He's actually still under the auspices of ESPN...it'll be a nonbranded site, but Grantland will be a property of ESPN. He's under their control, but the leash has been extended, is my guess.

Either way, I'm so pumped to see this. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to start prepping my resume...
